Ever wonders how the quartz watch got its name? The name has a more literal significance than you might think. It is actually powered by the quartz crystal, a mineral most closely resembling the compound of sand and which comes from the Earths continental crust. It is this mineral in minute quantity that has the ability to keep time more accurately than any other mechanical or automatic watch.

The discovery of how a quartz crystal could accurately power a wrist watch changed portable timekeeping like no other invention. When the first quartz watch was introduced in the United States in the early 1970s it was an expensive wrist watch priced at around $500. Not only that, it wasnt the most beautiful face ever to adorn a wrist. The LED (light emitting diode) that showed digital time was bright red, and the technology was only applied to digital watches. Later, the engineering behind quartz watches was transformed so the displays could be shown in digital format using LCD (liquid crystal display) or an hour and minute hand, just like a mechanical watchs face.

Shaping the Quartz Crystal

The quartz crystal of course is at the heart of how a quartz watch works. Quartz crystals have long worked as transmitters. They were and still are used in transistor radios. This same theory, in order to be applied to powering a wrist watch, had only a couple of obstacles to overcome. One was to get the frequency to not give off too much power. Quartz in a solid form gives off a low voltage of power when it is bent a specific way. The other obstacle was to create circuit boards, in miniature, that could regulate the power given off by the crystal and work at low power.

One of the reasons quartz is such a good material for the job of powering watches, or any other device, is that quartz, stays in a solid form at even extremely high temperatures. Because of this, once it is shaped, it will stay the same shape and therefore give off the same frequency and consistent power. It is also unchanged by just about any solvent, so it can work well with other materials needed to manufacture the inner workings of the watch.

Watchmakers soon figured out that a straight bar of quartz or one shaped like a tuning fork could keep the power going indefinitely. This action is referred to as the Piezoelectric Effect. When a piece of quartz is cut properly it provides a starting frequency which then causes oscillation. This translates into pulses that can be recognized by digital circuits on the circuit board. This then shows as a display of numbers that change at the exact timing with the oscillation caused by that perfect frequency.

The exact method used in a quartz watch involves using thin bars of quartz that are plated. Then, using chemicals, it is etched into the optimum shape. This works just like an integrated circuit.

There are certainly different quality levels and accuracy levels within the general category of quartz watch. This is because some quartz bars are cut better than others. The real objective is to have the precise relationship of the angle cut into the quartz bar correlate with the crystalline axis. Another major difference has to do with contamination of the components of the watch. If the quartz bar and circuit are well encapsulated, they are less likely to get contaminated, which will negatively impact the accuracy of the watch.

Quartz for Powering Watches with Hands

For a quartz watch with second, minute and hour hands the initial process is the same. However, at the point where a display would register on a digital watch, the oscillation instead activates an electric motor which then powers gears to move the hands at precise increments, or pulses that equal exactly one second, just like a mechanical watch.

Quartz watches have truly changed the way watches are made. There are still some people who prefer the art of a watch made solely by mechanical means. However, in a world where exactness and accuracy in keeping time often count, there is no substitute for the quartz watch.

I have never had a problem with the Fujis compared with other major brands like Sony, Memorex, TDK, Maxell, etc. The only problem about the Fuji discs are their availability. I can’t seem to find them anywhere these days. I have no idea why other DVDs fail me where Fuji always comes through. It probably has to do with the specific dvd writer that I use as many others find the other brands as reliable or even moreso than the Fuji.

I have no idea how Half-Life 2 is because I bought it from an Amazon marketplace seller and now the "Steam" anti-piracy protection system won’t let me play it.

I went to the Steam support pages like I was told to, and I read this:

"… you must have a copy of your purchase receipt from within the last 90 days to have the CD Key moved to your account.

"We do not accept receipts from online auction websites or used software vendors. If you do not provide a purchase receipt, Valve will not be able to transfer the CD Key."

I can’t believe that anyone accepts this as a reasonable way to sell consumers a game in a box, but I guess they do!

I read a thread on some Half-Life 2 forum where the users were telling a guy not to bother Valve, the software creators, with questions about their policy, but rather just to return his used game to whoever he bought it from.

Unbelievable!

From what I hear, maybe if I send the right person at Valve an actual photo of my box, and wait two months, I might be allowed to play. However, that’s certainly not what the text on the Steam support page says.

If this is really the accepted practice regarding used copies of Half-Life 2, then what is Amazon doing letting their marketplace sellers sell these used copies?

I played Half life 2 at a friend’s and liked it so I decided to buy my own copy. I made the mistake of buying a used copy. If you don’t already know, in order to play HL2 you need to create a "steam" account with which the game’s CD key is verified online. My copy, being a used one, was still registered under the original owner’s account; and as a result I can’t even install it! There is a CD key reset option available through the steam support site but I have not received a reply from them after submitting everything necessary for a new key. It’s a fun game when it works, but buy a new copy!!!!!!!!

This game is perfection. Being new to the Half Life series i had no idea what i was in for. Some random nerd at the Fry’s electronics told me to buy this game over medieval 2. "So be it!" i thought. When i started the game in a 1984 type post apocalyptic world i was sold. Then i got to expirience the graphics, gameplay, violence and vehicles. This game is a 5 for 5. I am anxiously awaiting the release of "Episode 2" and even more anxiously waiting to see what the MOD community does with the source engine.

Well, I was a big fan of the original Half Life and the expansion packs that came after its success. However, I didn’t bought Half Life 2 as soon as it came out, I did play it at a friend house, it was awesome…but somehow managed to foget about it for a couple of years.

Now, when I saw this bundle (with the original Half Life with the source water and stuff) and the Episode 1 expansion…I didn’t even it. I just bought it. And let me tell you, playing Half Life 2 (and now Episode 1) can only be described as … incredible. The physics engine, the great looking graphics (by today standards as well) the story, characters (I love DOG) its…just…awesome.

I truly recommend buying this bundle OR any Half Life 2 bundle for that matter. Its worth it.

Game requires Steam to run, you might as well be installing ad-ware on your computer. Steam loads on startup, loads advertisements with large graphics, constantly updates, and completely limited the functionality of my PC. Counter-strike is fun, but the game is absolutely not worth what it does to your computer. Also, the uninstall feature on the DVD does not work, so I had to remove the files individually from the registry.

This is the biggest disappointment I’ve ever had from a video game. I’ve never written an online review but wanted to warn people about this game. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

This book is primarily a compilation of material available elsewhere either in other books of the same author, in the Google online documentation or in various blogs of web professionals. Attention to details is not the author or the editor’s forte: there are numerous typos and don’t blame your eyes if you see the same sentence twice (at the end of a page and at the beginning of the next). The layout is not particularly appealing either and a large portion of the book is a self-promotion exercise for the author, the publisher and various web professionals.
If you are a complete beginner and not put off by what I just said, it may be worth reading: there is still a fair amount of useful content in the book. Repetitive at times but if you’re a beginner it might be sensible to go over the same concepts more than once.
